06/23/2010 - Las Vegas, NV (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin made history Wednesday by being voted an NHL first team All-Star for each of his five seasons in the league.
Ovechkin topped the previous record set by Montreal Hall of Fame goaltender Bill Durnan (1943-47). Ovechkin won the Ted Lindsay Award Wednesday as the most outstanding player selected by the players association.
Joining Ovechkin on the first team was defenseman Mike Green, also from the Capitals. Green is a first All-Star for the first time in his career. Others on the first All-Star team are Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller, a pair of Chicago Blackhawks in defenseman Duncan Keith and right wing Patrick Kane, along with Vancouver center Henrik Sedin.
It was the capper to a big night for the group in Las Vegas. Sedin took home hockey's top honor, the Hart Memorial Trophy, as the player judged to be the most valuable to his team for the 2009-10 season. Keith won the 2010 Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman. Miller earned the Vezina Trophy as the top goaltender.
Canucks left wing Daniel Sedin was named to the second team, marking the first time in 36 years that brothers had earned berths on post-season All-Star squads in the same year. In 1973-74, Boston center Phil Esposito earned first team honors and Chicago goaltender Tony Esposito was voted to the second team. Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov of the Phoenix Coyotes, defensemen Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings and Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings, center Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins and right wing Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning were also voted to the second team.
