Senators down Devils to stay unbeaten

10/08/2007 - Ottawa, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Daniel Alfredsson had a goal and two assists as the Ottawa Senators defeated the New Jersey Devils, 4-2, to remain unbeaten.

Dany Heatley recorded a goal and an assist and Jason Spezza added three helpers for the Senators, who have begun the season with four straight wins.

Netminder Martin Gerber finished with 27 saves for Ottawa, which has killed off 21 straight power plays to start the season.

Zach Parise had a goal and an assist for the Devils, who lost to Ottawa in last year's Eastern Conference finals in five games. Martin Brodeur ended with 33 saves.

Ottawa outshot New Jersey 17-9 in the opening period and jumped out to a 2-0 lead. ther Just under five minutes into the game, Antoine Vermette fed the puck to Chris Kelly in the slot. A Devils player blocked his initial shot, but Kelly collected the rebound and wristed it past Brodeur for the goal.

The Senators made it 2-0 with 4:44 left before the first intermission as Alfredsson, along the right boards, sent the puck down low to Spezza, who sent the puck in front for Heatley and he buried to give Ottawa a two-goal lead.

New Jersey took advantage of a Senators turnover early in the second period to cut its deficit in half. After Ottawa coughed the puck up behind its own net, the Devils emerged with a 2-on-1 in front of Gerber and Dainius Zubrus found Arron Asham for the score.

The Senators responded with a power-play tally 5:33 into the final period. Alfredsson fired a shot on net and Wade Redden was there to stuff the rebound underneath Brodeur's pads to make it 3-1. The light didn't go off, but an upstairs review confirmed the call on the ice.

New Jersey answered just under two minutes later with a disputed goal of their own. Andy Greene rifled a shot on net from the point that Parise deflected up and over Gerber. Senators defenseman Andrej Meszaros appeared to save a goal, swiping the puck out of the crease. However, an upstairs review revealed that the puck crossed the goal line.

The Devils, though, were unable to carry the momentum and Alfredsson iced the game with an empty-net goal with 48.3 seconds remaining.

Game Notes

Brodeur fell to 28-17-4 lifetime against the Senators...Parise is now just three points shy of 100 for his career.

Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Odds

Will he or won't he?  Now that the Dallas Cowboys have a new head coach in Wade Phillips, the big question will be: Does Terrell Owens stay with the team.

Jerry Jones continues to suggest that Terrell Owens will remain with the team.

"I've said that he's back, he's here, he's under contract," Jones said. "In the interviews I've just been through (to hire a new coach), it was very clear to me how highly he's thought of and how much of an impact he had on our offensive success."

Just to be sure though, Terrell Owens cleared out his locker and removed his name plate.

Terrell Owens was among the Cowboys most productive players this past season, catching 85 passes for 1,180 yards and a league-best 13 touchdowns.

But T.O. is due a $3 million roster bonus in June, then a $5 million salary this season. Cutting him before then would save a lot of money and headaches.

Aside from the questions surrounding Terrell Owens, the oddsmakers at MySportsbook.com have concerns over starting quarterback Tony Romo's state of mind and whether he will remain a starting quarterback.  It is also not known how players will adjust to new head coach, Wade Phillips.
